Donald Trump has said Madonna is "disgusting' when interviewed about comments she made at the Women's March about blowing up the White House.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said: "Honestly I think she's disgusting. I think she hurt herself very badly. I think she hurt that whole cause. I thought her and a couple of others but her in particular. I thought what she said was disgraceful to our country."
At the core Womens March in Washington DC on 21 January Madonna said: "Yes, I'm angry. Yes, I am outraged. Yes, I have thought an awful lot about blowing up the White House. But I know this won't change anything." She also changed song lyrics to "Donald Trump, suck a dick" after giving the speech.
This part of the speech was perceived by Trump's team as a violent threat towards him. Refusing to even mention Madonna's name, the White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus said: "One of the singers said she wanted to blow up the White House. I mean, can you imagine saying that about President Obama."
Madonna responded to this on Instagram wanting to clarify her intentions: "I am not a violent person, I do not promote violence and it's important people hear and understand my speech in its entirety rather than one phrase taken wildly out of context."
She continued: "I spoke in metaphor and I shared two ways of looking at things — one was to be hopeful, and one was to feel anger and outrage, which I have personally felt. However, I know that acting out of anger doesn’t solve anything. And the only way to change things for the better is to do it with love. It was truly an honor to be part of an audience chanting “we choose love”.
The Washington DC Women's March was just one of many protests taking place across the globe in reaction to Trump's presidency. In the United States alone three to four million people have been estimated to have attended.
