Benicàssim's first wave included some massive names: Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Weeknd, Kasabian and Foals. But it's not all about the mightiness of headliners, it's the quality as you go down the list that's just as important.
To compete in this increasingly congested festival market, some intelligent bookings are needed and fortunately Beniàcssim, which takes place 13 - 16 July, have come up with some goods.
EDM king Deadmau5 is playing a Spanish festival exclusive that will be a spectacular show visually too,. Stormzy is electrifying live and will be commanding a huge crowd. Less than a year ago the same couldn't be said, Gigwise saw him in Sonar with about 1,000 people in attendance, it had the feel of a local show so it's amazing the difference a few months heavy publicity can do.
Peter Doherty is without question one of the best songwriters of a generation and will be taking his band awesome band The Puta Madres down for what will be a highlight of the weekend. Seeingly gone are the days where he doesn't show up (touch wood) and the band have been on immense form ever since the spectacular Bataclan reopening in November.
Meanwhile, the Polaris prize winning producer Kaytranada made one of the albums of the year in 2016 with the incredible, 99.9%. To see him live in the Spanish sun is a treat not to be missed.
Furthermore, Sunflower Bean may have a dreamy guitar pop album when it's heard on record but see them live and they're a thrillingly tight, energetic, and heavy band.
