The end of the road for Childish Gambino

Donald Glover says his music career is no longer 'necessary'

It’s the end of the road for Childish Gambino – aka actor, writer, producer, rapper and all-round polymath Donald Glover – after announcing that his next album will be his last. Performing at the 2017 Governor’s Ball at Randall’s Island Park, New York, told the crowd: “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.”

Speaking with the Huffington Post, Glover explained that he feared becoming obsolete.

“There’s nothing worst than like a third sequel, like a third movie and we’re like, ‘again?’” he said. “You know, I like it when something’s good and when it comes back there’s a reason to come back, there’s a reason to do that.”

He went on to explain that any further albums after the next one would undermine the punk mentality that he’s subscribed to.

“I feel like there’s gotta be a reason to do things and I always had a reason to be punk,” he continued. “Being punk just always felt really good to me and we always looked at Atlanta as a punk show and I feel like the direction I would go with Childish Gambino wouldn’t be punk anymore. As much as ‘Redbone’ is a punk song because it’s a gospel song that’s on the radio, I’m like there’s only so far you can go before you just are the radio.”

‘Redbone’ has become his most successful single to date. It currently stands at Number 17 in the Billboard Top 100, while its parent album, Awaken, My Love!, debuted at Number One in the Billboard R&B charts upon its release last December.

Not that Glover is going to be putting his feet up. He’s set to appear in Spiderman: Homecoming as well taking on the role of the young Lando Calrissian in Han Solo: A Star Wars Story as well as voicing Simba in Disney’s remake of The Lion King.
