Griff Lynch, ex Yr Ods frontman/guitarist, has unveiled his fourth single as a solo artist exlsusively via Gigwise. Listen to the stunning 'Tynnu Dant' below.
This Welsh language cut keeps on the electronic path the bilingual singer's been perfecting with his preceeding singles, and it's as strong, if not stronger, than his best single of the first three, 'No One Cares'.
'Tynnu Dant' - which means pulling teeth in English - is a colourfully woven leftfield pop banger, complete with echoing synths, despondent vocals, and electronic drum beats. Slow burning at first it builds into an emphatic chorus and soars as he harmonises with a second, female vocalist.
His talent also would likely gain the respect of drummer Bill Ward from Black Sabbath. Last night we caught a video broadcast at Regent Sounds of him being interviewed about the release of a new Black Sabbath boxset. There he proceeded to reel off a couple of things that he thinks makes a great band; namely a sense of dynamic and the ability to experiement. To his credit Griff Lynch posses these qualities by the bucket load.
This characteristic of wanting to try new things is best understood knowing the journey Lynch has taken as a musician. Before this new solo project, he was pedalling a jangly indie aesthetic and sound with his first band, Yr Ods. Seeing him turn his hand to this is a massive achievement.
Due to his avant garde leanings, Griff Lynch may remain a cult concern but that's not to say he hasn't got his fair share of love in the mainstream press: Huw Stephens is a strong supporter of his music, Clash have also given him praise in the past, and in Wales he's got a strong following thanks to years of playing live.
Let's hope that as his music carries on down this more original path that new legions of fans follow. We hope too that he never stops creating as he's simply too gifted and up there with Gwenno, H Hawkline, Cate Le Bon and myriad other great Welsh acts to have surfaced in the 21st Century.
