HODJE doesn’t waste any time getting straight into the core of a song in her new single ‘Make Me The Villain.’ Within the first second we are met with a load-bearing synth and the line, “there was a time I was fiery and new,” and what happens from there is a mix of different sounds, creating a real fluctuation of electronica.

The first verse draws from a tale of heartbreak. HODJE talks about drifting out of love with somebody, not been able to sleep because of it and generally feeling at a loss. Contrast with the sound of the track, which has funky drums and synth, creating a sexy disco-esque setting. It’s already quite interesting to listen to but then as the song progresses, HODJE isn’t afraid to switch up the tempo, instruments and tone, which really keeps the listener on their toes.

In a pre-chorus we switch to distorted guitars, before halfway through there is a noise and feedback heavy breakdown which drives into the chorus. The mix is lacking slightly, but all in all, considering there is so much happening throughout the song, it’s a lot of fun to listen to. Pair that with the overriding theme and lyrics about embracing villainy if it means freedom, you’ve got yourself one hell of a track.

“The song, to me, is about accepting that sometimes standing up for ourselves might mean we are characterised as the villain in someone else’s story,” says HODJE, “the hook of the song is ‘make me the villain and set me free,’ and that’s because there is something freeing about accepting that we can’t control people’s opinions of us or what character role we are assigned to.”
