You have to feel sorry for a lot of pop artists sometimes. They need to be able to create a song which resonates with what people associate with pop music, but which at the same time offers something new that people are going to pick out on and latch to. It’s a hard balance to strike but it’s something that ‘Kefeider’ does on his new single ‘Running Like It’s Easy’.

The song has memories of 80’s synth pop lodged within thanks to light synth, 808’s and wub-style bass which line the intro and chorus. Accompanying them are sweet vocals, lyrics relatively poignant and heartfelt. It’s catchy and lovely to listen to but one of the standout features of the song is that there aren’t any massively stand out features. The elements blend together and complement one another but there is no particular element which is doing all of the heavy lifting within the track.

The song is catchy, with the verse and chorus taking on a melody that sticks in your head as Kefeider proclaims, “you’re running like it’s easy, doesn’t always seem fair” in a way which is accessible and soulful. His voice is cloud-like, high and light, which is easy to ride as you bop your head along to this single.

The outro is a standout element too. I’m not sure what instrument is being used to make the sound that performs a sweet melody to see the tune out but it sounds middle eastern. It’s another component which makes the tune individual for all of the right reasons, it remains fun but offers something a bit different, which is what every pop song this day and age needs.
