Overcity ride a sweet sounding nightmare

More about:

Overcity are a relatively new band, originally formed back in Autumn 2022 but already making waves with what is quite an expansive, chaotic and energy-filled sound. This is reflected clearly on the bands brand new single ‘Old School Love’ which has just recently come out.

The song begins almost dreamlike. The guitar playing is short, notes cut off early, plucked and changed alongside a warm cloud-like synth. The whole song gives the feeling of floating, a feeling which is only added to by the gorgeous vocals of lead singer Christian Franzen. The sound within this opening is so comforting that the band could have stuck with it for the whole song, but they don’t, they deviate and keep things fresh and exciting in the process.

When the chorus kicks in, drums become chaotic, a complete contrast with the peaceful nature of the other instruments and yet it works incredibly well. It’s as if the dream that has already been established begins to teeter on nightmare but rights itself before things get too serious.

“Have you ever felt the feeling of being in love? Except you’re also eating breakfast at Tiffany’s and singing in the rain at the same time?” Said the band about the new single, “Then you’ve felt the old school love!! We tried to make a musical painting of Audrey Hepburn, and we hope it also sounds like the dawn of the stone age.”

The new single comes out ahead of the band’s debut album in June, and if these releases are any indication then it is going to be one to keep your ears out for.
