It’s an exciting day for fans of The Coral, who have just announced that they are going to be releasing TWO brand new albums this year, not to mention they have released their first piece of new music since 2021 in the form of new single, ‘Wild Bird’.

The new single imagines an Italian Spaghetti Western that was never made. The video is one of scorched sand and cardboard cowboys, acting as the perfect introduction for the first new album set for release in September this year ‘Sea Of Mirrors’.

The new song has a galloping sound to it. A horse trodden rhythm with western-like guitars. It comes with a great string section and a continuous sound which is hard to not nod your head to. The lyrics are concept, they talk of a wild bird taking you far away and match the tone that is being set by the instrumentals incredibly well.

“Like most of The Coral’s best known songs you could pick out, it was written in about five minutes,” said James Skelly about the new single, “once the album concept was clear, this was us imagining the theme tune for an Italian western directed by Fellini with a Richard Yates-written script. It’s us asking ourselves: what would have happened if Lee Hazlewood had produced a Gene Pitney song written by Townes Van Zandt?”

Pedantic inspiration aside, the new single definitely hits the brief and marks an occasion which we can get excited over. The Coral has legendary status within British music and it’s exciting to see them continue to push themselves creatively. One new album would be good enough, but two on the horizon is enough to get up at the crack of dawn at, no cowboy shoot out required.
