Dreamlike shoe gaze

This song immediately throws you off guard. It starts with some static, almost like you’re in the first few seconds of a harsh noise song, but that quickly changes to something welcomingly unpredictable as a dreamlike chord progression and buried reverb vocals bring you into the new single ‘Oat Milk’.

Dutch Criminal Record are a band from Brighton who have had no trouble turning heads with the string of releases which came before this one. Described by Earmilk as “a blast from the past yet with a sweet, juicy freshness that makes you feel like you’re discovering something new,” the band continue on this same trajectory with a breezy new single.

The whole thing feels incredibly connected, almost as if hand doesn’t leave guitar when players move from one chord to another. It creates a cohesion throughout the song as if all of the instruments are joined together. I’m not normally a huge fan of drowned out vocals but on this track they work and add to the atmosphere of the song.

Joe Delaney-Stone spoke on the track saying, “I wrote Oat Milk in the winter of 2022/23. Just sat at my computer waiting for a student to join an online lesson, I was messing around with some chords and started to hum a bit of a melody along to them. As I started to develop the rest of the song I took a lot of inspiration from shoe gaze productions styles. Borrowing a lot from bands like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive’s early stuff and The Cure.”

This can all clearly be heard on the track and adds to the earlier mentioned cohesion of the song. It really is one that’s hard to find fault with and definitely a track to add to your summer playlist.
