German researcher Peter Jäger revealed earlier today that he's named a new Malaysian species of spider after David Bowie – the fetchingly titled Heteropoda Davidbowie. But what other animals have been named after famous music stars?

  • Orectochilus orbisonorum – A type of water beetle was named in honour of Roy Orbison in 1998. For those of you that are interested, the beetle is about 5mm long and lives in India. Above is a magnified image of the insect.

  • Aegrotocatellus jaggeri – A species of trilobite, an extinct marine animal with a hard shell, was named after Mick Jagger when a fossil was discovered in 1995.

  • The aforementioned Heteropoda Davidbowie. Ain't he pretty?

  • Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi – Perhaps the coolest animal on our list, Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi is a species of trapdoor spider discovered just two years ago. M. neilyoungi lives in Alabama and Florida.

  • Arcticalymene viciousi / Arcticalymene rotteni / Arcticalymene jonesi / Arcticalymene matlocki – In 1997 four species of extinct trilobite (a running theme with rock stars) were named after each member of The Sex Pistols – Sid Vicious, Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones and Glen Matlock respectively.

  • Phialella zappai – This type of jellyfish was named after Frank Zappa in 1987. Jellyfish nut Ferdinando Boero gave the species its name in a bid to meet his hero Zappa. The musician was touched and the pair soon became great friends – what a touching story.

  • Preseucoila imallshookupis – This little critter is a type of gall wasp and takes its name from Elvis Presley's lyric “I'm all shook up” in the 1957 song 'All Shook Up'. Unlike Elvis, these wasps didn't die sitting on the toilet.

  • Zappa – A genus of goby, a species of fish, also takes its name from Frank Zappa. Ed Murphy who christened the little slimy thing said the reason he named it Zappa was because “I like his music.” Please note it's not the above shark. We've included this image because we like it.

  • Pachygnatha zappa – A lovely spider was discovered in the mid-eighties but wasn't given its name until 1994 when Robert Bosmans and Jan Bosselaers named it after Frank Zappa. The spider resides in Mount Cameroon
