Miley Cyrus won the MTV VMA for Best Music Video last night for 'Wrecking Ball' - and sent a young homeless man on stage to accept the award for her.

Cyrus arrived at the awards with the young man, who is called Jesse, and ushered him onto the stage when it was revealed she had won the biggest award of the night.

"My name is Jesse," he told the crowd according to Rolling Stone, "and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people."

As Cyrus sat on the side of the stage crying, he added, "Los Angeles, entertainment capital, has the largest population of homeless youth in America. The music industry will make over $7 billion this year and outside these doors are 54,000 human beings who have no place to call home."

Last night, Cyrus also shared a video on her Facebook page urging fans to make a donation to My Friend's Place, in order to be in with the chance of winning backstage tickets.

At last year's VMAs, Cyrus drew a lot of attention for very different reasons, after her performance alongside Robin Thicke caused a huge amount of controversy.
