Aphex Twin has described Madonna as 'properly mentally ill', due to the nature of modern pop music.

Speaking for a cover story of the new issue of Q Magazine, Richard D James talks about how his love of modern music goes far beyond esoteric electronica. "I actually really like pop music but it's all the other stuff that goes with it," he explains.

"I think you have to be mentally ill to be really famous. I'm only partially mentally ill, because I'm semi-famous! But if you're like Madonna, then you're properly mentally ill, basically. Because you have to be. I have hung around with enough famous people to realise they've got a serious insecurity problem."

Elsewhee in the interview James discusses a disagreement with Kanye West about the use of 'Avril 14th' for My Beautiful, Dark Twisted Fantasy. James rejected the request but the track - 'The Blame Game' - still appeared on the album. "I felt like they tried to stitch me up. I said to my publisher, 'Just don't fucking give it to them'"

Aphex Twin's excellent new album Syro is out now and is currently number eight in the charts, his highest chart position of his career.
