The BBC have fallen foul of Ofcom regulations on two separate occasions this summer, including Lily Allen swearing during a live show and a documentary starring Mr T featuring a track by Ludacris.

Lily Allen's set at Big Weekend was broadcast in May at 5.30pm and featured the singer swearing six times in eleven songs. Ofcom received three complaints and said the BBC should have halted the performance after Allen swore during her second song.

Ofcom said the show breached broadcasting regulations depsite repeated apologies and multiple warnings from Radio One beforehand, including Scott Mills saying that the set "may contain some strong language".

The BBC said it took the use of bad language “extremely seriously”, but said there was a “strong argument for providing listeners unable to attend in person with the opportunity to enjoy an ‘as-live’ atmosphere that mirrored the experience of actually being at the event as closely as possible”.

A Radio 1 spokesman said: “We note the findings of Ofcom and the trust; we have examined our procedures and tightened them accordingly.”

In a separate complaint, Ofcom also rapped the BBC for using the track 'Move Bitch' by Ludacris just after 7pm in a documentary called 'World's Craziest Fools' hosted by Mr T.

It featured 25 uses of the word 'bitch' in two minutes and generated four complaints. The BBC argued that BBC 3's young demographic would somehow cope with the mild profanity and that the use “bitch” in such a short space of time meant “its capacity for offence was blunted rather than intensified”. Ofcom disagreed, ruling it offensive to be broadcast before the watershed.
