Kanye West has dubbed his interruption of Beck’s Grammy acceptance speech as 'kind of a joke'.
As previously reported, at Sunday night's Grammy Awards, Beck was presented with Album Of The Year for Morning Phase, much to the shock of Kanye West who, like many in the audience, assumed Beyonce would walk away with the prize. West then appeared on stage to jokily recreate his protest about Beyonce's snub in 2009. He then declared after the ceremony that "Beck needs to respect artistry and he should've given his award to Beyonce."
In a new interview with Ryan Seacrest, West has offered further insight into his thinking behind the intervention. “It was kind of a joke – like the Grammys themselves,” he said. He explained that he wanted to "just joke around" with his previous interruption of Taylor Swift at the 2009 Video Music Awards. “So, the voices in my head told me go, and then I just walked up, like, halfway up the stage ... But I just didn’t really want to take away from Beck’s moment, or the time he’s having to talk.”
Beck revealed his thoughts on the matter early this week. "I was just so excited he was coming up. He deserves to be on stage as much as anybody," he told US Weekly. "How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?” Asked if Beyonce should have won the Best Album award, Beck responded: “Absolutely. I thought she was going to win. Come on, she's Beyonce!”
Beck also addressed the question of 'artistry'. "You can't please everybody, man," he replied when queried about Kanye. "I still love him and think he's genius. I aspire to do what he does."
It is not all bad news for Beck however: following the ceremony Amazon have reported that his album sales have gone up 1,342%.
