Madonna briefly posted a picture praising Margaret Thatcher on her Instagram this morning, before having a change of heart and swiftly deleting it.
The singer posted a photo of the former British Prime Minister alongside the quote, "If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing." She captioned the photo, "Thank you Margaret Thatcher! #unapologetic #rebel heart."
Thatcher was one of the most enduringly divisive leaders the country has ever seen, with a legacy that includes supporting the retention of capital punishment, abolishing free milk for school children, attempting to re-introduce the regressive poll tax, and, most infamously, precipitating the demise of hundreds of coal mines.
Unsurprisingly, Madonna's photo thanking Thatcher didn't go down particularly well with a lot of her British fans, and she promptly deleted it. It lives on though, just like Thatcher does, in people's memory and online.
I wake up and the first thing I see on instagram is a picture of Thatcher posted by Madonna.
