Exclusive shots of Johnny F**kin' Marr in London
23 October, 2014: Johnny Marr brings Playland to London with an epic, career-spanning set at Brixton Academy - featuring none other than special guest Noel Gallagher. Check out our exclusive photos here.
"I'd like to introduce someone who has been a friend of mine for 20 years," said Marr as he beamed from the stage for an encore. "One of the greatest songwriters from this country. He's a good man, I think he's got a big future ahead of him. Mr Noel Gallagher."
Gallagher silently swaggered on stage to a rapturous applause. The pair then ended the show with a cover of Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' and a magnificent rendition of The Smiths' classic 'How Soon Is Now'.
However, truth be told, Marr had already pulled off one of the gigs of the year. New material from the incredible Playland was given a fresh lease of life on the Brixton stage, as the title track, 'Easy Money' and 'Dynamo' shone with his classic Smiths-y majesty but driven by a vigorous punk energy. Then of course Electronic's 'Getting Away With It' and Smiths' staples 'Panic', 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before' and 'There Is A Light' united the capital crowd in ecstasy.
In short, Marr couldn't have done more. Here he stands: a master of the past, present, and most importantly, the future.
Johnny Marr played:
'Playland'
'Panic'
'Upstarts'
'Easy Money'
'25 Hours'
'New Town Velocity'
'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before'
'Back In The Box'
'Speak Out Reach Out'
'Generate! Generate!'
'Bigmouth Strikes Again'
'Boys Get Straight'
'Candidate'
'Getting Away With It'
'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out'
'Still Ill'
'Dynamo'
'Lust For Life'
'How Soon Is Now?'
Speculation now turns as to whether Gallagher will appear at any more dates - at their hometown of Manchester in particular.
