Turning sweet dreams into a tangible reality, Will Joseph Cook headlines Heaven in support of his debut record ‘Sweet Dreamer’, with a little help from the caramel-voiced Ten Tonnes. Appealing to hundreds of adoring teenage fans in the central London vicinity, Will is the perfect example of a modern day popstar. Opening the set with the effervescent ‘Sweet Dreamer’ he looks the part too in a suave checker print shirt. “This is the biggest headline show I’ve ever done in my life,” he informs the crowd before seamlessly sliding into the pulsing anthem ‘Treat Me Like A Lover’.
Following on with ‘Plastic’, he needn’t worry as he croons, “I just don’t feel like dancing on my own,” as the entirety of the room are there moving with him, and it’s extended into the aptly titled ‘Take Me Dancing’ too.
Tracks from Will’s first EP, like ‘Daisy Chains’, also make an appearance, and they’re just as warmly received as the new album, bleeding effortlessly into the set. “I’m trying really hard not to do lots of little speeches in between songs,” he begins afterwards, “But it’s such an exciting time to be releasing music,” he offers to the crowd raising a very valid point.
A solo rendition of ‘Water’s Gone Cold’ brings Heaven to a standstill, providing one of the rarer, placid moments of the evening, and ‘Habit’ follows in a similar vein. Picking things up again, soaring tune ‘Girls Like Me’ is a pop whirlwind, much like much of Cook’s material, as he pines, “Girls like you don’t come around that much.” The acoustic-led ‘Biggest Fan’ sees many audience members fighting for the title sat upon shoulders as they chant the lyrics back to Will with adoration. “I’m dangerously happy right now,” declares the singer right before launching into ‘Beach (I Wanna Make You Mine)’, the climax of the triumphant set. After this display it’s obvious to see that boys like him don’t come around that often.
