Everything Everything's seamless transition from budding music students at Salford University, to a band that made music-lovers across the nation sit up and take notice happened following a nomination for the BBC's 'Sound of 2010' shortlist.

Debut album 'Man Alive' brought a Mercury nomination a year later and cemented their status as an act who strive to produce pop music that never goes without a twist of intrige.

The beginning of 2013 coincided with the release of follow-up 'Arc', and a hint of their healthy progression came when the record broke the Top 5 in the UK album chart.

The album's success has been emulated on the live stage too. An eagerly anticipated live tour culminated in a sold out homecoming at Manchester's Academy 2 last night.

Unfortunately, after a captivating set from art-rockers, Post War Years, the evening hits a worrying stumbling block when the sound desk fails.

In the meantime, however, the audience stay in high spirits. The sound engineer can't keep a straight face as his mic check receives the kind of applause the night's headliners would probably be happy with.

Everything Everything eventually arrive on stage half an hour late meaning between-song chat must be kept to a minimum. Despite resulting from circumstances beyond their control, the band are admirably apologetic as they launch into recent single 'Kemosabe'.

It seems the four piece are more than worth the wait as the atmosphere kicks up a gear during 'Torso of the Week' and 'Qwerty Finger'.

Their loyal fanbase then demonstrate they know the new material inside out as the decision to play 'Arc' bonus track, 'No Plan', is well received by all.

2010 single 'Schoolin'' is a particular highlight and has everyone moving. A rendition of 'Suffragette Suffragete' then causes frontman, Jonathan Higgs, to reminisce over the band's first ever performance of the track- at a show within the more modest surroundings of Manchester's Night and Day Cafe.

The main set finishes with 'Cough Cough', and the crowd are left to wonder how much the encore will be restricted by earlier delays.

Not a jot as it turns out. They return to play four songs, including firm favourite 'MY KZ, UR BF'. The night ends in the same way as 'Arc' with a soaring version of 'Don't Try'.

All credit must go to Everything Everything for ensuring that, despite technical hitches, their return to the city that conceived them is a triumphant one.
