The Horrors – ‘She Is The New Thing’

starstarstarstarno star

Or, in other words, “The One Where The Horrors Have A Go At A Proper Tune”. Yes, though they may have given it a coating of black paint, this is a 60’s garage surf number, a cross between Dick Dale and a Hammer horror soundtrack, with an added layer of some screeching organ too. Faris Rotter has toned his voice down a tad too, meaning it isn’t as out and out aggressive as their previous shock n schlock rock. Which isn’t to say this is all happy bunnies and flowers, more that ‘She Is The New Thing’ is clearly the most accessible track the Horrors have, removed from the guttural anger of  ‘Sheena Is A Parasite’ and its ilk, though still boosting a seething resentment of ,err, everything.

While the theatrics and Rotter in particular have received all the press attention, this at least highlights the band’s music, letting you focus on the psychedelic vibe of the organ and the incessant twang of the guitar. There’s the usual outpouring of angst from Rotter’s vocals but on the whole this is a surprisingly groove driven track that is both catchy and danceable.

Released 25/06/07 on Loog Records
