Sony is to setup a global music download service under the Playstation brand in an attempt to take on the dominance of Apple’s iTunes.

The service is being developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, it will eventually allow music to be downloaded onto the Playstation Portable which will launch in the UK in March, reports Brand Republic.

In other download news Napster has announced that they are looking at using their music download business to distribute films and television programmes, as well as videogames.

Chris Gorog, the chairman and chief executive of Napster has said: “We are currently considering moving into video, particularly to tap the younger videogame generation. I do think that, while there are huge players in the deliver of movies like Sky, there could be a role for Napster.”
