Starbucks have signed a multiyear deal with Spotify which will see stores promoting and making use of the streaming service.

The franchise, which has over 21,000 stores worldwide, has been significant to the music world in the past, by selling CDs and offering free download codes to customers on their pick of the week. Now, like so many of us, they're moved over to streaming services.

Starbucks chief Daniel Ek joked, "We're really making the Barista the DJ here," which relates to the fact that Starbucks employees and customers will be able to select their favourite songs in the store. Employees will also be offered a free subscription to Spotify premium - which potentially opens up the possibility of hearing more diverse tracks than James Taylor and Carly Simon.

Upon discontinuing the sales of CDs in store in February, a rep hinted at their musical evolution in Billboard: "Music will remain a key component of our coffeehouse and retail experience, however we will continue to evolve the format of our music offerings to ensure we're offering relevant options for our customers."

This new deal will come into play in Autumn 2015.
