Doctors in Spain asked Carlos Aguilera to play the saxophone during his 12-hour brain operation in order to monitor his brain function. The patient was undergoing the intricate surgery to remove a tumour deeply embedded in the brain.

The 16 surgeons asked Aguilera to play the saxophone whilst they operated to measure reactions.

Aguilera remained awake during the operation so that the surgeons could monitor his speech, hearing, movement and of course, his saxophone playing.

As odd as it may seem, this brain surgery performance is not the first of its kind. A tenor underwent a similar operation in Utrecht and sang part of Schubert’s Winterreise.

33 year old Brazilian, Anthony Kulkamp Dias also played a Beatles song on the guitar during his operation to remove a tumour. Patients are required to stay conscious to allow doctors to map the brain and avoid injury.
