Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Farrell has said that he was “very angry” the first time that Metallica played Lollapalooza.

While he is “honored” to have the band headlining the festival this year, Lollapalooza founder Farrell told Rolling Stone that when the band played the festival in 1996, he didn’t think that they would fit in. "I was very angry the first time they played Lollapalooza," he said. "I helped create the genre alternative, and alternative was against hair metal, teased-out hair, spandex, bullshit rock music. Metallica, in my estimation at that time, wasn't my thing. I was into alternative and punk and underground. My friends were Henry Rollins and Gibby Haynes and Ice-T."

However, looking back now, he admits that he was “kind of harsh” on the band, revealing that they were not the first group that he didn’t want to play the event. “I'm all about genuine, authentic, heartfelt, the real deal," he shared. "So I was not sure about Metallica back in those days. It's my fucking party and I'll have who I want." Now, however, he likes Metallica's music.

In the interview, Farrell also discussed Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, stating that he thinks they were “scraping together things” to make the documentary.

"He's gone now,” he said, “so you can't very well ask him to do another take, can you? He's very high. And if it was me, I would have said, 'I need a change of clothing.' But I thought he was a very gentle soul and who knows what would have become of him had he lived."

While on the subject of Cobain, Farrell discussed briefly meeting the late Nirvana frontman, saying: "I must admit, I got high with him in the basement of the Palace when he came to Los Angeles, and I hung out with him at one of the MTV awards shows... We had a mutual respect…I think the cat had the right idea, he had the right attitude. Except only one thing: I love life. You have to kill me. I will never kill myself. That's the only difference."
