Jamie XX was accused in yesterday's press of using a sample without getting clearance, only for the accusation to be withdrawn.
The track 'I Know There's Gonna Be (Good Times)' - a collaboration with Young Thug and Popcaan - features a sample of The Persuasions, a New York cappella group, and their 1972 single 'Good Times'. A member of the band claimed that it was never asked by the producer to use the sample on his record.
Jimmy Hayes, The Persuasions’ bassist, told Billboard he knew nothing of the sample: "A friend of mine said that he had heard it some place. He said, 'I just heard this song, he was sampling your song.' I said, 'Sampling what song?' He said, 'When I heard it, I said oh, wow, that's the Persuasions! That's Mr. Jimmy!'"
However, yesterday morning Hayes retracted his statement, saying: “I was told about it but I forgot.”
According to Billboard, a representative from Jamie XX’s camp confirmed The Persuasions sample had in fact been cleared by Universal, and that the group was contacted prior to the song's release.
The track was leaked online just a few days ago. In Colour is due out June 2 on XL Records.

The artist spoke to XXL last week about recording the track: "I sent the song to other people who did versions, but [Thug and Popcaan’s] version fit best on the record… Young Thug has such a weird style I love, especially the things he does with his voice. It just sounds different."
He said: "I like that Popcaan is so young and he comes from a different place, but they complement each other very well… I ended up splicing it together for the final version.
“Young Thug was really quick. I was surprised with how quick he got back to me. They got to hear the final version and they were happy. They said they want to do more stuff together."
