A$AP Rocky proved this month that he cares more about art than social media, when he lost 100,000 followers in just 10 hours after posting a series of mysterious images.

It turned out these images formed an art project. The star began by posting a cryptic message on Twitter, saying something about art in the city (we think).

He followed this up with a series of 12 completely blank white images on Instagram, which got a mixed reception from fans.

One said: “scroll down his whole page, so annoying”, and another described it as “Annoying asf”.

However just one of these blank images received almost 5,500 likes, a phenomenon commented on by another Instagram follower: “Ok.. now tell me how does a white picture with absolutely nothing on it get 5k+ likes.” Another received a staggering 11,000.

Despite the baffling amount of likes for the blank images, it’s estimated Rocky also lost about 100,000 followers in just 10 hours.

Then he uploaded a series of more than 150 blank posts, slowly changing gradient from white, through grey, into black. When he began adding images, the art project was revealed.

The project is in collaboration with Robert Gallardo, who told Complex the project was "modern day fine art, just delivered to you differently because of the times we live in. Social media feeds instead of galleries”.

He said: "Rocky found me based off of some artwork I did in memory of A$AP Yams. "Once he found me, he was impressed by my other work and wanted me to join the team. Now I'm his art director."

Apparently AWGE (mentioned in Rocky’s original cryptic message) is an “internal creative team” that Rocky is building. Gallardo said: “He has big plans for what it will become, but that's what it is currently."

Even now that it’s become clear what the strange posts were for, fans still have mixed feelings about them.

Earlier this month, Rocky dropped new track ‘Everyday’ featuring an unlikely trio of Rod Stewart, Miguel and Mark Ronson. He also confirmed the release date of the up-coming album - At.Long.Last.A$AP - as 2 June, pushed back from its original release of 2 May.
