Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has released single ‘Cool On Fire’ and his debut solo album on the same day.
Global grunge phenomenon Silverchair rose to fame in the mid 90s, after winning a radio competition and being signed to a label aged just 14. The band announced an ‘indefinite hiatus’ in 2011.
Silverchair gained a massive following with albums Frogstomp and Freak Show, before critical acclaim came later with more experimental records, Neon Ballroom, Diorama and Young Modern.
Johns released his first solo material for eight years at the beginning of 2015, with a track called ‘Aerial Love’, marking the beginning of a new direction in his sound.
Working with Lorde collaborator Joel Little, the material released to date is a far cry from Silverchair’s output: a slick R&B sound reminiscent of FKA Twigs or BANKS, showcasing Johns’ newly sultry vocals.

His debut solo album, Talk, has also been released to coincide with ‘Cool On Fire’.
Johns knows that the new material could prove divisive among Silverchair fans. He said: "What’s funny is that when Silverchair released Frogstomp most people went out of the way to tell me how much it sucked. Then when we made Diorama a few years later everyone started telling me how I should go back to making Frogstomp. I guess now I’ll be told to go back and make Diorama again!
“That was part of why I picked the album title too by the way. I don’t really care what most people think. Let them talk."
