Morrissey criticises Obama for being too white

The Smiths singer insisted, 'His presidency has meant nothing'

Morrissey has criticised President Obama’s attitudes towards protecting the African American community across America from police brutality.

In a recent interview with The Daily Beast, Morrissey stressed his disappointment in Obama’s attitudes towards race relations throughout America, as well saying, "He’s as close to soft, whiteness as someone who isn’t white could get."

The former Smiths frontman spoke specifically about incidents in Ferguson and the murder of the black, unarmed teenager Michael Brown.

“If Michael Brown had instead been one of Obama’s daughters, I don’t think Obama would be insisting that the nation support the so-called security forces!”

When he was asked to explain his comments about Obama being "white inside" on the Larry King Show, he made the argument that the President hasn’t done nearly enough to bridge racial divide:

“I can’t see him doing anything at all for the black community except warning them that they must respect the security forces. This is ludicrous because the so-called security forces are the Ku Klux Klan to most black Americans. It seems evident to me that black males are being deliberately murdered throughout America as a closing message to Obama, telling him that his presidency has meant nothing and that the division of colour is now bigger than ever.

For a moment, Morrissey expressed himself with a little more clarity, saying that American police forces regularly target “the extreme poor” who have “no influential friends and therefore can’t retaliate, and the cops know that they can play about with poor people.”

He then made further criticisms of the President, and in the most controversial moment of the interview, he suggested a less “soft,” white Obama would be more effective:

“The final point about Obama is that he doesn’t look overly African black. He’s as close to soft, whiteness as someone who isn’t white could get, and I often wonder if he would have been elected if he had a stronger, more African-black face? It’s a point.”

Morrissey recently revealed the cover art and release date for his debut novel, List Of The Lost.
