Freddy Lim, the lead singer of Taiwanese heavy metal band Chthonic, has been elected to government in Taiwan - making him the first heavy metal star to be elected to parliament anywhere in the world.

Granted, we're not exactly sure many heavy metal stars have actually tried to become politicians, but it's still quite some feat. Lim, who sports long hair and tattoos (something a press release went to great pains to repeatedly point out), co-founded the New Power Party.

Lim defeated Chinese Natonalist Party MP Lin Yu-fang, who had held the seat for two decades. Though he lagged behind his rival inititally, media attention and support lead him to win by a 4% margin.

Lim has also served two terms as chairperson of Amnesty International Taiwan, supported the Sunflower Movement and advocated the spirit of Taiwanese independence in his band's music.

Watch Lim's campaign video, and then one of Chthonic's music videos below.
