A petition to get David Bowie featured on the £20 note has gained over 15,000 signatures in four days.

Just days after releasing new album Blackstar on his 69th birthday, Bowie died on Sunday (10 January) after an 18-month battle with cancer - one he had deliberately kept secret from the public.

Shortly after the news broke, a fan set up a petition on Change.org to get the iconic musician featured on the £20 bank note.

The Bank of England is due to announce a successor to economist Adam Smith, and so far, just over 15,000 people think that successor should be the Thin White Duke.

Explaining the impetus behind the petition, Simon Mitchell said, "[Bowie's] music has sound-tracked important events in the lives of many of us. His visual art and sense of character brought a new combination of music, performance and imagery into mainstream culture.

"A 2002 poll of '100 Greatest Britons' voted for by the public listed Bowie as number 29 which demonstrates the how celebrated and familiar he is to British people. There is no better person to be on the next £20 note.

"The Bank of England is due to announce a successor to Adam Smith, who is currently featured on the reverse of the UK £20, and the public were asked to nominate a non-living visual artist. Bowie's innovation and art included painting as well as his better know music and acting careers. As a non-living visual artist he now meets the Bank of Englands Criteria for the next person to feature on the £20 note."
