Mike Garson, David Bowie's long-time collaborator and pianist, says David Bowie "felt like [Lorde] was the future of music."
Lorde and David Bowie were first photographed together at Tilda Swinton's 53rd birthday party back in 2013, and Lorde subsequently revealed that Bowie told her that her music sounded "like listening to tomorrow", while the two "held hands and gazed into each other's eyes."
So it was a fitting decision to recruit her to pay tribute to Bowie at last month's BRITs, following his unexpected death in January.
In an interview with Periscope, Mike Garson - who played the piano on the Ziggy Stardust tour and contributed to Aladdin Sane, and who performed with Lorde and Bowie's other bandmates at the BRITs - said, "David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music, and they had a few wonderful moments together."
He added, "She was the perfect choice. Some of David’s family members and David’s management had some suggestions she’d be the right one. They wanted to bring the next generation in."
As NME reports, Garson also discussed the rehearsal process ahead of the BRITs performance, saying, ""She was so nervous. She actually said if she didn’t sing the song to David, she couldn’t have gotten through it."
