Peter Mensch, the manager of bands such as Muse, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers, has described YouTube as “the devil” in a new radio documentary.
Mensch, who began his career managing AC/DC at the age of 26, contributed his views for BBC Radio 4 Documentary The Business Of Music, which examined the staggering effects the birth of the internet had on the music industry.
“YouTube, they’re the devil,” said Mensch. “We don’t get paid at all. If someone doesn’t do something about YouTube, we’re screwed. It’s over. Someone turn off the lights.”
As the BBC reports, Mensch’s concerns haven’t come out of the blue. Last week, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry published its annual report, claiming that there’s a widening “value gap” between the amount of music consumed online and the amount of revenue they generate for the industry.
