DJ Paul Oakenfold performed what he calls "the highest party on Earth" 17,600 feet up Mount Everest yesterday (April 11).
Noting that the higher people are the more they like his music, Oakenfold made a week-long trek up the mountain to become the first DJ ever to play at Base Camp as part of a SoundTrek project two years in the making.
The performance is set to be released as a live album, accompanied by a documentary following Oakenfold’s trip, which also raised money for causes including the Himalayan Trust, Mayor’s Music Fund, Supporting Nepal’s Children and Youth Music. The superstar DJ has also donated equipment to the local community to allow for more mountain raves in the future.
Footage from the event which Oakenfold posted to Facebook show a small, heavily insulated crowd raving along to the DJ’s set, performed on a makeshift stage constructed from stones and tent-poles covered in bunting.
“My aim [is] to shed light on the plight of the some people of Nepal in the only way I know best, through playing music,” Oakenfold wrote in a diary of the hike. Watch footage from the show below:
