Despite not being on the guest list of the good and the great from the music media, the legend that is Ghostbusters actor Dan Aykroyd managed to get past the red rope to gatecrash an album playback by Scottish rockers GUN last night (June 6).
The Glaswegian band had taken over the basement bar of the Sanctum Soho Hotel in London for a playback of their new single and album - both called Favourite Pleasures - and, being the good hosts that they are, a whisky tasting session. As the new album – the band’s ninth – blasted out through the speakers, it soon became apparent that Dan Aykroyd – one of the actual Blues Brothers – had made his way in.
Speaking exclusively to Gigwise, GUN frontman Dante Gizzi (pictured above with Aykroyd) explains what happened.
“He was going downstairs to use the bathroom and he overheard the new album blasting out of the cinema room so he came in and hung out,” says Gizzi. “And he was getting into it! Turns out he was a bit of a fan of the band. I couldn't believe it. Louis Winthorpe III digging the new GUN record! I’ve got to say I was blown away.”
A clearly chuffed Gizzi continues: “Trading Places has to be one of my all time favourite movies. The scene with him eating salmon on the bus drunk and chewing through his Santa jacket will be forever etched in my memory. Luckily he didn’t do that with the fish cakes down here after a few whiskys!”
Unlike his Ghostbusters co-star Bill Murray, Aykroyd resisted the temptation to get up and sing but he hung around long enough to check out GUN’s new album and pose for pictures.
GUN’s new album, Favourite Pleasures, is out in September and the single of the same name is out next week.
