Twin Peaks (the band - not the David Lynch series) have unveiled their a-side 'Tossing Tears' and lush shoegaze-y b-side 'Under the Pines' - yep, singles are coming back.
The band have opted to avoid sitting in an entirely digital world, and every month for the rest of the year they release 300 seven inch copies of their music. It's part of an initative the band have done to promote their music called Sweet '17 Singles.
Unfortunately, the two cuts below are no longer available on record as you have to subscribe here and you get a copy delivered to your house before they make the internet.
The band's retro ways aren't limited to marketing themselves. Creatively, they seem to love old ways of recording as it seems that there's nothing on the two songs below that owes any debt to the 21st century. The first of the two is a classic sounding jangly pop affair with harmonies and warm Whitney-esque brass flourishes. The other is more chorus-laden and feels like some of the more adventurous parts of the first Childhood record.
It wasn't long ago, Twin Peaks were pushing a much harder edged garage rock sound and performing live at ear drum bursting volumes in small venues. This shift sonically is the sign of a band ill-afraid to try new things and the quality of recording and ability to make the song sound so effortless and flowing is testament to their current great form.
Perhaps there's something in the process of releasing records this way that's liberating and getting the best out of them. But it could also be the sign of a band spending a lot of time with Mac De Marco. When Gigwise last met Twin Peaks in London on their 2015 tour (watch the tour diary video here) they spoke of being chums with the old dog and taking six packs around to his place to chill - and if you're planning on taking a six pack to chill somewhere then this music suits it perfectly.
