The Kidd Creole, a member of legendary rap collective Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, has been arrested and charged with murder, according to US website TMZ.

The rapper, whose real name is Nathaniel Glover, allegedly stabbed a 55 year-old homeless man, who has been identified as John Jolly, multiple times in the torso on Tuesday night (August 1).

Creole is often considered a pioneer of hip-hop for his work as part of the Furious Five, whose 1982 single The Message is one of the most acclaimed formative tracks of the genre. In 2007 the group were the first hip-hop collective to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame. Glover now works as a handyman and security guard in the area of the stabbing, and according to the New York Daily News was en route to work when the altercation took place.

It’s believed that Glover reacted angrily after being called a homophobic slur by the man, with the police using surveillance footage to identify him.

As a source told the New York Daily News, “[Glover] turned, interpreting that the guy was making an advance toward him. One thing led to another, and he shivved him twice in the chest.” Glover was arrested in 2007 for possessing a knife and for possessing a gun in 1995 and 1982.
