It takes either a brave man or a foolhardy soul to cover Freddie Mercury – especially if Queen’s Roger Taylor is drumming behind you. Just ask Foo Fighters’ Taylor Hawkins who took on ‘Under Pressure’ at the weekend.

The all-star line-up – which featured Foo Fighters members Pat Smear and Nate Mandel, as well as Queen tubthumper Roger Taylor – took place during the opening set of Hawkins’ cover band, Chevy Metal. And while Hawkins tackled Freddie Mercury’s parts, his bandmate from his side project The Birds Of Satan, Wiley Hodgden had a go at David Bowie’s vocals.
The event took place during a surprise pop-up gig by Foo Fighters in the Hollywood Palladium’s car park on Sunday afternoon (26 August). Billed as The Holy Shits, Dave Grohl and his merry men used the event to promote Foo Fighters’ forthcoming October festival, Cal Jam, which is set to feature Iggy Pop, Garbage and Greta Van Fleet.
But yes… that cover of ‘Under Pressure’. Is Taylor Hawkins brave or foolhardy? We’ll let you be the judge of that after you’ve checked out the video here…
And right after this cover, Dave Grohl took to the stage for a version of The Faces’ 1971 belter, ‘Stay With Me’. Foo Fighters then took to the stage for a nine-track set made up of some pretty deep cuts. Foo Fighters played:
