The UK Official Charts has announced it will dedicate a weekly rundown of the very best and most popular Afrobeats music. Launching on Sunday, the new chart will keep its finger on the pulse of a genre fast growing in commercial popularity.

Tracked and released in conjunction with Afro Nation, the chart will work just ike its counterparts: compiling numbers on the newest songs to see which is selling and streaming the most.

A cause for celebration, BBC Radio 1Xtra is putting on an 'Official UK Afrobeats Chart Show' this Sunday (26 July) from 1-3pm BST. They'll have a lot of music to pick from: Afrobeat artists spent a total of 86 weeks in the Official Top 40 last year.

Now artists like J Hus, Burna Boy, Young T & Bugsey and Kojo Funds will now have a space to build each other up in a chart dedicated to Afrobeat.

“Africa to the world and back! It’s nice to see recognition of our music in the Official Charts, it’s a real game changer. We’ve gone from listening to Afrobeats on a more cultural level to now seeing it in a commercial space – nice to see!” Darkoo said.
