More about: Tonguetied
Looking for a new alt-pop obsession to fill a Caroline Polacheck-shaped gap in your playlist? Enter Tonguetied, the somewhat ironically titled project of songwriter and producer Elena Garcia, who shares her world for the first time with confessional bop ‘Losing My Mind’.
Accompanied by a trippy visualiser, the track combines Elena’s delicate, spectral vocals with striking bass synths to create a soundscape rich in texture and emotion.
Written back in 2021 - a year which many of us will remember as *ahem* less than ideal - ‘Losing My Mind’ is an unfiltered exploration of mental health in a time of social isolation. Speaking about its creation, Elena explains: “Whilst part of me craved being removed from it all, this feeling of detachment equally made me feel like I was starting to lose grip on my sanity”.
Struggling to navigate the tightrope between illusion and reality, Elena sat down one night and just pressed record, and it’s these original vocal takes which were retained for the track’s final mix. “In the moment, sadness may have been the driving factor, but many other emotions are interlaced into ‘Losing My Mind’”, she says. “Relief, anger and perhaps most surprisingly, planted by my honesty that night, a small but very mighty feeling of hope."
An intriguing and striking debut, keep your ears to the ground for more from Tonguetied later this summer.
