When you are dealing with four out of five members of Super Furry Animals, you kind of have permission to go into a tune thinking it’s going to be good, especially given the run up that Das Koolies have had to their debut album. At Gigwise, we’re happy to report that your high expectations will be met, as the newest single ‘A Ride’, is an appropriately name, 7-minute long, pop-funk rave epic.

Starting with a pitch-building synth, a sound eventually only heard by cats and dogs drops into an electronic funk-filled break beat. This provides the foundation for the entire track, which is repetitive, sure, but in no way stagnant.

Throughout the whole thing, the beat underlines the track, but thanks to the addition and removal of bells, vocals and various sci-fi sounds, there is a constant trajectory throughout, one that you as a listener are happy to go along with, and quite literally be taken on a ride. It’s an excellent song and hopefully an accurate reflection of the whole album which will be released in September.

“Maybe this one’s about thieves in public school uniforms and their tax haven stashes,” said the band about the new single, “the start was pure electronic. Then the vocals pushed open a door. What was behind it was kind of bizarre. But, then, that’s music.”

The track comes out following the bands announcement that they will be doing three in-store appearances at Rough Trade Shops. These shows promise to be get down filled epics, with tickets available now.
