Hip-hop broadway musical 'Holler If Ya Hear Me', based on Tupac's music, is set to close on Sunday after just six weeks since opening doors at the Palace Theatre in New York.
The New York Times said that Holler If Ya Hear Me is one of the worst selling musicals in recent years. Never making more than $175,000 in a week, last week the show only sold 45% of the theatre's seats.
The musical featured a range of Tupac Shakur's music incluidng 'California Love' and 'Unconditional Love' but was not biographical in any way.
One of the musical's producers Eric. L Gold said that one of the reasons of the musical's closure was due to "the financial burdens of broadway", he went on to state that “I was unable to sustain this production longer in order to give it time to bloom on Broadway.”
Gold mentioned that despite making a "rookie mistake" by underestimating the cost to keep the musical running that “a production of this calibre, powerful in its story-telling, filled with great performances and exciting contemporary dance and music will eventually receive the recognition it deserves.”
Luckily, the Tupac biopic movie is expected to be released in the next year.
