BBC Radio 1 has announced that Annie Mac will be the new host of Radio 1’s weekday evening new music show, starting on Monday 9 March.

Zane Lowe, the previous host of the slot, will be moving the United States with his family to work at Apple. Of Lowe’s departure and Annie Mac’s new appointment, Ben Cooper, Controller at BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, said: “Annie has proven she is a great ambassador for new music, and I’m delighted that she’s bringing her passion and knowledge to young audiences across the week. I’d like to thank Zane for 12 wonderful years at Radio 1, and wish him and his family all the very best.”

Mac of course was thrilled with the news and said: “I am so excited and humbled to be asked to do this show. The thing I love about music radio is those private epiphanies it provides. Having 11 hours of airtime a week to share those moments with music that has no boundaries, is beyond a job, it’s a privilege. And to be following in the footsteps of Zane Lowe, a broadcaster that I respect and admire enormously, is a huge honour. I can’t wait to get started.”

Mac’s first Radio 1 show was broadcast over ten years ago, on 29th July 2004. Since then, she has hosted a number of shows on Radio 1, including BBC Switch with Nick Grimshaw as well as the ‘Annie Mac’ show, airing from 19:00 to 21:00 on Friday nights.
