Courtney Love has opened up about watching Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck, calling the experience “very cathartic”.

Speaking with V Magazine, Love said that initially, she did not think that she could sit through the documentary, as watching footage of her late husband that she had not previously seen would be too difficult. However, she is now happy that she did.

“To see [the documentary] in that room with my daughter was very cathartic and I was very happy to spend a little time with him and to find out, to see things and hear audio, and see into his heart,” she said. “It was an important moment of bonding between Frances and me, and I think it’s very healing for our family and for our relationship.”

She continued: “Many people who've suffered the after-effects of suicide, and in Frances’s case, like any child of suicide, she wondered what part she played in it and why wasn't she important enough? I think the film points out that absolutely, without a doubt, from whatever age it is that he starts talking about it, that that was where he was headed.”

In the interview, Love also discussed the fact that her relationship with Kurt “rendered other intimacies meaningless”.

“It f**ked me up,” she shared. “I remembered the sexual relationship, which, as you know, is the core of any good marriage. It almost rendered other intimacies meaningless.”

“I don’t have a boyfriend right now, so I’m single. [The film] made me really evaluate what, at the age of 50, I want out of a relationship. He’s a hard act to follow. I love him and I always will.”

Last week, Love’s daughter Frances Bean opened up to Rolling Stone about her father and the documentary, which she co-produced. “It's the closest thing to having Kurt tell his own story in his own words – by his own aesthetic, his own perception of the world,” she said of the film. “It paints a portrait of a man attempting to cope with being a human.”

Kurt Cobain: Montage Of Heck will officially air on HBO on May 4 and is currently being shown in cinemas worldwide. It will also be available as digital download on April 24 and on DVD and Blu-ray from April 27.
