Ringo Starr (The Beatles): The butt of too many jokes, our Ringo never gets the credit he deserves. Sure, his songwriting calibre may have never reached the dizzying heights of McCartney, Lennon or Harrison, but he was still an essential part of the greatest pop force of all time - and one hell of a presence. Just listen to his remarkable sticksmanship, not to mention his incredible acting and sharp with in Hard Day's Night and Help. What a man - a true rockstar.

7 July: Happy Birthday to Mr Richard Starkey MBE, that's Ringo Starr to you. Yes, the great man turns 74 today, and we wish him many happy returns aboard his Yellow Submarine. There's no one quite like Ringo, and while he may often be the less celebrated of The Beatles, we'd say he was the original understated drummer - the cool one at the back.
Frontmen get all the glory, don't they? The singers and the men and women with the mic are always the ones that make the headlines, land on magazine covers and become 'the face' of the band. But cast your gaze beyond the spotlight and towards the back of the stage and you may notice an awesome force staring back at you. Who is that cool guy? It's probably the drummer.
Throughout the ages, the undersung hero of many bands has been the drummer. Butt of all musician jokes and never given the recognition they deserve, many have gone unnoticed. However, cool drummers are in abundance - here are just 12.
