More about: Beach Bunny
Beach Bunny’s sophomore album Emotional Creature sees the group finding their feet both musically and individually. The album is an exploration of the need to grow, adapt and change, finding beauty in the vast kaleidoscope of human emotions. Arriving with a brash Y2K inspired indie rock sound, Emotional Creature is simultaneously vulnerable and confident – finding solace in the messiness of life and navigating love throughout it all.

Bursting the album open, ‘Entropy’ establishes the bold and vibrant sound of Emotional Creature. It is unapologetically energetic from the offset, promising that this album will be as lyrically sharp as it is musically vibrant. This energy is carried across into the single ‘Oxygen’ with its upbeat candour contemplating upon the clarity discovered when you find the right person to be with.
Emotional Creature does at times struggle to balance the vibrancy and punchiness of its sound and risks falling into a repetitive space. It is however in the diversions from these moments that Beach Bunny navigate their own unique sound as a band. ‘Eventually’ is a highlight on the album, offering a deviation from the vibrant indie rock that Emotional Creature has heard so far. Leaning into grittier guitars and bass riffs to deal with anxiety, it sees Beach Bunny pulling from '90s rock and indie. This carries itself through the album, with ‘Fire Escape’ having a truly infectious guitar riff throughout its choruses.
Emotional Creature also sees Beach Bunny begin to experiment across their production soundscapes. Working alongside pop-punk producer Sean O’Keefe, the band have brought celestial soundscapes across songs like ‘Gravity’ and ‘Scream,’ melding imaginative galactical worlds with brash indie rock confrontation.
Confrontation is the key to Emotional Creature. Lyrically, Lili Trifilio deals with varying facets of the human existence, from the journey to self-love explored in ‘Weeds’ to the whimsical romanticism of ‘Karaoke’. Holding the album together is the lyrical refrain of "it all comes out eventually". Growing from the anxiety laden sense of the phrase in ‘Eventually’ to the relief of the closing moment on ‘Love Song,’ Trifilio’s sentiment grows with the album, closing on a newfound clarity and confidence.
At its core, Emotional Creature sees Beach Bunny trying to figure everything out. Musically they navigate the space between imaginative production and classic indie rock sounds, asserting a new and vibrant voice into the sound poised with lyrical sharpness and a willingness to embrace imperfections. Emotionally, the album finds Beach Bunny at various stages of anxiety, confidence, and love, but leaves them with the relief that beauty can be found in the experience itself.
