New York singer-songwriter Jesse Malin has been kind enough to let Gigwise premiere his brand new single 'You Know It's Dark When Atheists Start To Pray'. Check it out below.
A far-cry from Malin's original background in the hardcore scene, his more recent solo career has been channeling sounds close to the source of Neil Young and Tom Waits, creating immersive acoustic ballads that appeal as much to the heart as they do the cerebellum.
Following on from the release of his record, New York Before The War, earlier this year, Malin's latest album, Outsiders, out via One Little Indian today (9 October.)
The album originated from late night recording sessions in the Pennsylvania woods, as all great records are, with producer Don DiLego. Malin describes the album itself as "a record built out of optimism and disgust - one for the leavers, the believers, the hustlers and the chicken hawks who could."
'You Know It's Dark...' is a concise five minute encapsulation of this ethos, with a foot-stomping rhythm and tavern-like piano lines that trickle at the end of phrases. With an empowering attitude and spritely optimism, this is the perfect track to stick on to reinvigorate your Friday afternoon.
