Hotly tipped British rock band Don Broco reveal their thoughts on new single 'Money Power Fame' in an exclusive Behind The Scenes film.
Speaking to Gigwise, Rob Damiani explains all on the inspiration behind the track, the drone camera setup and, most importantly, how it feels to destroy a vintage Jaguar.
Watch: Behind the scenes on Money Power Fame
Gigwise: What is the concept behind the new video, ‘Money Power Fame’?
Rob Damiani: The song itself is really about just always wanting more. And it’s not necessarily a negative outlook on it because I think in day-to-day life that's the way we’re programmed: to always be striving for that better job, more money. Almost from when you’re a little kid at school you’ve got to get the grades to then get to uni, to get the job, to get the money and you’re always striving for that next better thing and the thought behind the song is: where does that really end?
With the video, there were a few different ideas behind what way we could go with it. It focusses on this girl, who’s the subject behind it. It’s a montage between that and us turning up in this fancy car. It was actually a really nice, done-up Jaguar, which we felt really bad about at the end because it doesn’t survive the end of the video. When we first got pitched that, we were like: ‘Really? How much budget is there for this video?’ But they managed to find a Jaguar that, basically it cost too much to sort it out for real and so the guy was like: "Yeah, I’ve always wanted to blow up a car. I’ll donate this to the video." So we were more than up for that.
In the backstage footage, using the drone camera, how much fun was that?
Ok, I’ll let you in on a little secret. As much as I wanted to actually fly that, unfortunately I wasn’t [allowed to], so that has been staged, that actual shot. I think they’re actually quite commonplace in videos, but we were like: "Wow!" We’d never seen one close-up so we were just: "What the hell is this little, weird thing out of Doctor Who, doing in our video?" It got some really cool shots where they come up and they get a really nice aerial shot of the Jaguar, of us playing, all these different things. We got to see them do it and I was like: "Do you mind if I have a go?" And they were like: "No, but you can fake it if you want."
How did you choose ‘Money Power Fame’ as the lead track for the new album?
It’s a song that changed quite a lot from when we were, basically writing the album. It was a song that really started off as quite a kind of slow, bluesy, kind of a rock and roll song but it felt a lot older than what it was. And we loved it when it was in that version.
It was only when we actually started taking it through the pre-production process that we thought: ‘Wow, this could sound really pumping if we play it this way.’ So the thing that kind of captivated us through that writing stage, it’s always nice when you’re writing songs and you get that initial buzz about them and then you almost rediscover them later on. You’re like: ‘Wow, this sounds good like this too.’
It was a song that straightaway we were like: ‘This is going to be a fun one to play.’ You know, it’s a big, loud one and we got to try it out at Reading and Leeds earlier this year. It was the only new song that we played at Reading and Leeds. The kind of reaction straightaway; you know you sometimes play new ones and the crowd are little bit: ‘Ooh, err.’ You can be a bit unsure until you know a song, but this song, straightaway, was a real crowd moment.
We thought it was a nice bridge between our last album and this new album. On the new one we’re writing we do try a few different things out. There’s going to be one or two tracks that maybe people wouldn’t have expected from us at first. But I thought that this was a nice one, almost to let people know that we’re back and it’s going to be a fun ride.
