Running from 10am to 3pm, Moving The Needle will host 10-minute, one-to-one mentoring drop-in sessions for young women from all ethnicities, backgrounds and personalities that are hoping to break the glass ceiling of the UK music industry or reach their full potential in their career.
Speaking on Moving The Needle’s mission, Getahead CEO and MTN board member Jenni Cochrane says, ““It’s about education and opening gateways after Uni. Students we meet are blown away by the fact we are women who’ve reached such a senior level in music. That shouldn’t be the case.”
Jenni will also be joined by Moving The Needle’s additional mentoring experts – women from high-powered roles with knowledge of the wide range of jobs available in the industry, including label management, studio engineering and production, finance and administration, performance, operations, tour management, sales, marketing and promotion, supply chain, and physical production including graphic and production designers.
Silvia Montello, Head of Operations, Audio Network; Co-Founder/Director at #remarQabl, explains, “My advice around education is that it never stops and if you keep learning you keep growing! That “Learning” doesn’t need to be formal, and it shouldn't stop once you’ve left school or college, it's about being curious and open to new ideas and information, and how you can use that to constantly evolve and be your best self at every stage of your life and career.”
With findings from the UK Music Diversity Report finding that women hold 65% of the entry level roles but only 1/3 of senior management roles, Karen Emanuel, CEO of Key Production, comments, “I want to help others achieve the kind of things I have. I feel I have a lot to pass on, and I aim to do it!” While Eve Horne, Founder of We Are The Unheard campaign, continues, “Structural sexism in the music industry is undeniable when you see the stats on the under-representation of women/non binary in all areas. It is a shocking testament to inequality in 2021. We aim to alter this.”
Jenni, Silvia and Karen will also be joined by Julie Weir (Music For Nations, Sony Music) and Siofra McComb (Positive Subversion) to provide anything from career advice, industry insights, CV feedback and interview/application prep. The drop-in sessions will be run on a first come first serve basis on the day, so get down early to avoid disappointment.
Tickets for Getahead Festival are available now from £11 here.
