More about:

After two consecutive online editions, Eurosonic Noorderslag finally returns to Netherlands’ cultural hub of Groningen. As ever, the festival is packed with some of the most exciting new artists across Europe – ESNS has a formidable reputation for being champions of exceptional talent, with the likes of Sigrid and IDLES winning coveted ESNS Exchange awards in previous years.

Gigwise will be on-site, hopping from venue to venue to check out some of the buzziest new artists Europe has to offer. Here’s eight we’re especially excited to see:

Aiko – Huize Mass, Fri 20 Jan, 20:00-20:45

London-based Aiko’s unique brand of brooding dark-pop has already garnered glowing write-ups from a number of influential blogs. Her rich, cinematic sound has been showcased across two excellent records – and recent single ‘Instincts’ hints at a poignant, electronic future for this eclectic artist. Her set is not one to be missed.

Key Track: Daughter of the Sun

Gallus – Huize Maas, Wed 18 Jan, 23:40-00:20

An out-an-out rock band with all the blood and thunder of Scottish contemporaries Twin Atlantic and Biffy Clyro, Gallus have already triumphed at the 2022 Scottish Alternative Music Awards and look set to have a big 2023. Formed in a Glaswegian pub of the same name, the five-piece’s brand of post-punk will undoubtedly land them high-profile slots at summer festivals throughout the UK and beyond.

Key Track: Are You Finished

Hause Plants - Vera, Thurs 19 Jan, 23:45-00:30

Portuguese indie-rock prodigies Hause Plant have gathered serious momentum in the last 12 months with a string of excellent singles. Their understated, catchy melodies bury themselves deep into your consciousness upon first listen – and recent EP ‘Sleeping With Weird People’ feels like a true realisaiton of their potential. A late-night set should prove to be the perfect fit for a band whose music is made for intimate, sweaty dancefloors.

Key Track: Small Talk

Joya Marleen – Huize Mass, Fri 20 Jan, 23:00-23:45

Pop-sensation Joya Marleen has already topped the airplay charts in her native Switzerland and it’s clear to see why – her music has mass-appeal and feels ready-made for radio. Listen a little deeper, however, and you’ll find hidden depth; smart poignant lyricism and gorgeous instrumentation underpins her pop sensibilities.

Key Track: Next To You

Klangphonics – Huize Mass, Fri 20 Jan, 23:45-00:30

With music made for the silly hours, German trio Klangphonics blend acoustic instruments with electronic soundscapes to magnificent effect. They provide the perfect soundtrack to hazy club nights, with 2021 release ‘Songs to Try’ providing an irresistible odyssey of deep house and techno. Their set should act as a perfect Friday nightcap.

Key Track: Ethereal

Babs – Oosterpoort, Sat 21 Jan, 19:15-20:00

Dutch rapper Babs had a prolific 2022, releasing nine singles and two EP’s, tackling gender stereotypes through the carefully-crafted art of the hip-hop banger. Having taken to the stage at Rotterdam Pride and Pride Amsterdam, she has already amassed a cult following in the Netherlands – and so her set at ESNS is unlikely to fall under the radar.

Key Track: Bennie Boos

Big Joanie – Blauwe Hemel, Fri 20 Jan, 00:00-00:40

Punk voices are always prominent at ESNS, and London trio Big Joanie are one of the bands that will be heard the loudest this time around. Signed by ex-Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore, they are famed for their ferocious live performances and raucous, uncompromising lyrics – with recent release ‘Back Home’ proving to be a career-highlight. With their star continuing to rise, now is the perfect time to catch them in an intimate setting.

Key Track: In My Arms

B Young – Simplon, Fri 20 Jan, 23:45-00:30

East London rapper B Young’s afrobeat sensibilities provide a wonderful backdrop to his cheeky, laid-back delivery, with personality exuding from each of his releases so far. His lyricism has already connected with millions of listeners, but it’s B Young’s colourful production that truly sets him apart – on the evidence of debut album ‘Differences’, his set is an absolute must-see for anyone making the trip to Groningen.

Key Track: Ride for Me
