Patti Smith's memoir, Just Kids, is to be turned into a television series by Penny Dreadful's John Logan.
The memoir, which was published in 2010, focusses on the singer's relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who died in 1989 from complications from AIDS. Mapplethorpe photographed Smith for the iconic artwork of her debut album, Horses.
As Digital Spy reports, the forthcoming series, which will be broadcast on US TV channel Showtime, has been in the works since 2011. It's to be adapted by John Logan, the man behind Penny Dreadful.
"Just Kids is one of my favourite memoirs of all time," Showtime president David Nevins said in a statement. "Not only is it a fascinating portrait of artists coming of age, but it's also an inspiring story of friendship, love and endurance."
He added, "I'm so thrilled that Patti Smith will bring her unique voice to writing the scripts along with the gifted John Logan, who has been doing such a phenomenal job with Penny Dreadful for us."
Meanwhile, it was recently revealed that Courtney Barnett will be performing Smiths' Horses album in full at The Melbourne Festival.
