Death Cab For Cutie's Facebook was hacked, fans reacted brilliantly

The whole sorry affair led to a pretty great hashtag

Death Cab For Cutie have apologised after their Facebook was hacked with sexually explicit links - but the incident sparked a string of good-humoured memes and hashtags from the band's fans.

After Imogen Heap's Facebook suffered a similar fate earlier in the week, last night (19 August) it was Death Cab's turn. The hackers' posts were quickly deleted, but many, many fans helpfully screenshotted them.

Another was titled "6 Best Sexual Positions You Didn't Know", along with an extremely explicit video still that we will spare you at this time of the morning, and the caption, "Breakfast it's the most important meal of the day.."

Eventually, the band managed to deal with the hackers, and posted a very sincere apology.

DCfC's Facebook was hacked this evening and explicit content was posted to the page. The account is now secure and fans will not be subjected to these kind of posts in the future. Our sincere apologies.

It seems fans weren't as offended by the whole thing as the very serious apology assumed though. After one fan commented with the hashtag, "#DeathCabForBooty", the idea took on a life of its own.
